The History Of The Old Post Office Event Center

Our Story

Construction began in 1873, and the Old Post Office and Customs House was completed in 1879. Designed by A.B. Mullett and Company in the Richardsonian Romanesque style, the building features round arches, stone masonry, and towers. Like many historic downtown buildings in Evansville, Indiana, it was constructed by Charles Pearce and Company and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.

Today, the Old Post Office is being carefully restored. Many features throughout the building are refurbished original elements, including crown molding on the NW 2nd Street side restored by the same group that worked on the West Baden Hotel, repurposed marble in the bathrooms relocated from other areas of the building, “picture windows” created from historic photographs found at Willard Library, and columns that were rediscovered within walls added over the years.
